Time to bring in a new round of interns to help make the co-op all it can be. Develop your skills, gain experience, and earn 3 credits -- while supporting the co-op!

If you're interested, all you have to do is come to the co-op on Wednesday, May 4th at 1:30pm to run for a position. A group vote will decide who gets it. Let's review the internship positions:

FOOD ORDERING
The food-ordering intern is responsible for keeping the co-op stocked with food and drinks. It involves placing orders and receiving the delivery. Other responsibilities include taking inventory and stocking new items that students would buy. He/she works closely with the finance intern to make sure the co-op stays within budget.

VOLUNTEER COORDINATION
The holder of this position keeps the volunteers and shifts organized. This means sending out e-mails to the campus community and to former volunteers to fill the co-op shifts, training new volunteers, finding replacements for volunteers who can't make their shift, and communicating with volunteers. This internship is great for developing managerial skills and is a vital component in keeping the food co-op up and running.

EVENTS COORDINATION
The events coordinator works with students who wish to book the space for events, and makes sure all events run smoothly. This entails keeping updated information on the co-op's online calendar, as well as working with tech services. As well as coordinating events that others run, the events coordinator also hosts co-op sponsored events throughout the semester.

FINANCES
The finances intern is responsible for keeping accurate accounting, depositing and withdrawing money to the co-op's safe as needed and to the more card office to pay for the food orders, managing the expenses and budget, and sending weekly up-date e-mails to the faculty sponsor.

FACILITIES MANAGEMENT
This intern is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the co-op space. by working with other interns and volunteers, he or she ensures that the co-op is a clean and comfortable place. This means maintaining furniture and fixtures (doing repairs yourself as well as contacting the proper authorities when necessary) and ensuring their proper use and placement. It also involves arranging furniture to accommodate events, and making sure the room is returned to its proper arrangement afterward.

MARKETING
The marketing intern is in charge of advertising the services the co-op offers the campus community. It is his/her responsibility to design and hang flyers, work with leaders in other groups on campus to inform the student body about the co-op, update the online networking services, and work with the other interns to be informed on what is going on in the co-op. This internship calls for creativity, communication, and people skills.

BECOME A VOLUNTEER!
Have you ever dreamed of becoming a volunteer for the Purchase Food Co-Op? Time to pick the interns for Spring 2011. The co-op is a student-run organization with no affiliation with the PSGA. It is owned and operated by students for the greater community's benefit. Though there isn't one person or people who are in charge, there is a need for interns to help the co-op run a little more smoothly. The internship counts for business credits (1-4 credits are available, depending on how many hours you think you'll be working per week) and Bill Guerrero is the faculty sponsor who will be monitoring your progress and signing off on paperwork. Here are the positions:

Food Ordering

The food-ordering intern is responsible for keeping the co-op stocked with food and drinks. It involves placing orders with Tree of Life and the Alternative Baking Company for the items via telephone and also communicating with the driver with the delivery. Other responsibilities involve taking inventory and stocking new items that students would buy. He/she works closely with the finance intern to make sure the co-op stays within budget.

Volunteer Coordinator

In this position your main responsibility is keeping the volunteers and shifts organized. This encompasses sending out e-mails to the campus community and to former volunteers to try to find people to fill the co-op shifts each semester, finding replacements for volunteers who can't make their shift or when volunteers can no longer fulfill their duties, and also communicating with the volunteers. This internship is great for improving managerial skills while also being a important component in keeping the food co-op up and running.

Events Coordinator

The events coordinator is responsible for all events that take place at the co-op. His or Her main responsibility is coordinating with students who wish to book the space for events, and making sure all events run smoothly. This entails keeping updated information on the co-op's gcal, as well as constant correspondence with students booking the space, and working closely with tech services. As well as coordinating events that others run, the events coordinator is also expected to dream up and carry out several co-op sponsored events throughout the semester.

Finances

The finance intern is in charge of the co-op's finances; attending the weekly co-op meeting, being a key holder to the co-op, closing and opening the co-op, counting out the register, keeping accurate accounting, depositing and withdrawing money to the co-op's safe as needed and to the more card office to pay for the food orders, and sending weekly up-date e-mails to the faculty sponsor.

Facilities Management

The Facilities Management Intern is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the co-op space. His or Her main responsibility is collaborating with interns and volunteers to ensure that the co-op is a clean and comfortable place. This entails a combination of maintaining furniture and fixtures (doing repairs yourself as well as contacting the proper authorities when maintenance is beyond your experience.) as well as ensuring their proper use and placement. (Transforming the space by moving furniture around to accommodate various events etc.)

Marketing

The Marketing intern is in charge of advertising for the co-op. This includes advertising the services the co-op offers the campus community. It is his/her responsibility to design and hang flyers, communicate with other leaders in other groups on campus, working with them to get the co-op’s name out there, update the blog, and work with the other interns to be informed on what is going on in the co-op. The internship challenges your creativity and develops communication and people skills.

ALL INTERNS must attend Wednesday planning meetings at 1:00pm as well as send weekly updates to your faculty advisor. A short paper about your experience will be expected of you at the end of the semester.

Interested in running for one of these positions? Come to the co-op community meeting on Wednesday, December 8th and 1:00 in the co-op. All you need is a short description of your previous experiences (if any), what skills you have that will make you good for the job, and what you can bring to the co-op through this internship. The description can be written up or made up on the spot, and will be delivered out loud to the group. A group vote will decide who gets the position.

2011 Slingshot organizers!

A Slingshot Organizer is a planner that lists popular activist and alternative cultural holidays for every day of the year, a contact list of radical groups around the globe, a menstrual calendar, info on police repression, and keeps you organized! We order all of our food through Tree of Life, a source for vegetarian, vegan, and organic food and other items. We are charging 5% more than wholesale price, which is a great deal! The recommended amount is 20-25% more than wholesale.

Here are the steps to take advantage of this service.

1. Stop by the co-op to look through the catalogues for the items you would like. Unfortunately, due to the large size of the catalogues, we cannot offer them online.

2. Ask a volunteer for an order form. Fill out the item name, product number, wholesale price per unit, and number of units.

3. Multiply the price per unit by how many units you are ordering for each item. Then add all of those prices for the subtotal.

4. Add 5% of your subtotal to your subtotal for the final price. (if you need a calculator or help, don't be afraid to ask our volunteers)

5. Give your completed sheet to the volunteer

6. The volunteer will give you a receipt with your items and the grand total listed.

7. A few days before the shipment comes in, you will receive an email reminding you to pick up your order. Shipments come in every other Wednesday around 12:30-1:30. Bring your receipt with you and please make every effort to come in when the shipment arrives. We can't be responsible for storing of your products, due to the fact that the co-op is a public space.

Payment:

At the moment, we are only accepting cash. A full time events manager is vital to ensure that performers, clubs and organizations are aware of the co-op as an outlet. The events intern will also maintain the events calendar, communicate between shift volunteers and people wanting to book the co-op to ensure both parties are satisfied and there is no overbooking.
Good organization and communication skills are a must have.
Volunteer Organization Intern
Without volunteers, there is no Co-Op. The Co-Op simply would not run. The volunteer organization intern will be the one who makes the schedule of when he volunteers come and go. They will also be the go-to person if a volunteers runs into scheduling problems, or if someone cannot make it to their shift. The volunteer organization intern will be the one to send out volunteer-wide emails and communicate with individual volunteers, for whatever needs arise.
Good organization and communication skills are a must have. Not to mention a dynamite smile.
Marketing Intern
The campus needs to know that the Co-Op is around for them. Not only are we an alternative food source for all of the students and faculty, but we also hos a series of events. Marketing for internship credit will involve posting flyers and making banners for different events and messages we want the community to know about. In the beginning of the semester, the marketing intern will be responsible for enlightening the campus about upcoming Co-Op general interest meetings.
A creative mind and a good eye is vital for this. Communication between the events intern and the volunteer organization intern is also important. Visual Arts printer access doesn't hurt either.
Facilities Intern
Light bulbs burn out, things break, sinks leak. The Co-Op needs a full-time intern who is capable of keeping the place up to snuff. Routine maintenance and a creative mind for what can be done in the future will take up a good bit of time. For instance, not only will the walls need paint, but we may want to add stage lighting to brighten up the place for shows.
We need someone who isn;t afraid to get a little dirty and who has good general handyperson skills. Common sense is also key.
Food Ordering Intern
Originally, the whole purpose of the Food Co-Op was to provide wholesale groceries. Today, we have branched out, but food ordering is still a very crucial element. The food ordering intern will organize/do inventory every so often, depending on how fast food is going, and will then place orders with our distributors: Tree of Life, Alternative Baking Company, and Luke's Brew. You can imagine why communication between the food ordering intern and the finances intern is very important.
Good planning skills and taste buds are a necessity.
Finances Intern
The Co-Op deals with real money, and without a full time finances intern, the money situation can become very unorganized. Bi-weekly deposits must be done, as well as book keeping for our records. The finances intern typically decides how large our food orders can be, or perhaps if we have the funds to buy a new set of speakers.
Excellent organizational skills are vital. This is a great gig for someone who falls into routine well. Communication between the food ordering intern and the facilities intern is very important.

Candidates should also keep in mind that participation in the weekly Co-Op meetings on Wednesdays at 1pm will also be required.
If interested, please email purchasecoop@gmail.com and come to our meeting April 28th at 1pm!

Much love,
Co-Op Management

APRIL EVENTS!

The Purchase Food Co-Op will resume normal hours on Monday April 5th

WEEKLY STAPLES

every Monday
at 6pm Jordan Lee Davis runs an INFOSHOP with a different theme each week! come read erotic poetry, learn to juggle, and more!
9pm - Purchase Garden (info)

every Wednesday
1pm - co-op meeting! everyone is welcome. if you have an idea, come pitch it to us and we'll vote on it.
